The publication system is ruined, just as so many other things, especially when they have been touched by digitisation. This is my way out: privileged as I am with my tenure I can step out of the big paper mill and focus on writing and reading. So this is performed life in ruins, aggressively using the spoils (spolia) of digital systems, seeking to shore what must not collapse, and to strip out what is not needed.

Texts written or republished in 2026. This volume is a stock-taking as well as a beginning: my colleagues and I have been writing about ruined relations for some time, and this work is collected here, to be structured later. To begin with, relations between humans (demos), between humans and what they know (episteme), and between humans and non-humans (and everything in between: metabole) seem a good place to start. Republishing our earlier work here shows that these three categories cover our past interests. The metabole is slightly overrepresented in line with our focus on sustainability.
The question that remains is whether ruination is sufficiently generative in 2026 to create new thinking. Let's find out.
